Conventional and Non-Conventional Development

Though humankind’s technological breakthroughs have been steadfast since its inception, they have experienced exponential growth after fossil fuels and their multiple applications were discovered.

During the last decades, the world’s focus has been on boosting the development of sustainable energies and increasing renewable energies in the global energy matrix. The transition to these energy sources are crucial to our future, and the oil industry is responsible for leading and supporting this process. This involves integrating innovative technologies and practices in its operations to reduce its environmental impact, making its operations more efficient, and increasing production along this transition, thus helping meet a growing energy demand.

When studying the region within this context, it has been found that Brazil has increased its hydrocarbon production, thus ranking among the top ten world producers thanks to the offshore conventional development. Oil production in Argentina has also been increased, and fifty percent of her production comes from non-conventional wells.

Presently, conventional developments are tackling a major challenge to remain competitive in the face of a growing non-conventional development, which involves improving the recovery factor and the costs per barrel. Non-conventional development’s challenges are also related to both subsurface and surface: wells’ interferences; enhancement of landing levels; drilling and completion strategies; implementation of new technologies; infrastructure, logistics, environment and regulatory framework.
